From your point of arrival, use the public transport information we provide to make the journey to Bantry.

Walk through the grounds of Bantry House, ancestral home of the Earls of Bantry, and then pass a holy well and a Mass Rock, before quiet farm roads lead you uphill. A beautiful ridge walk with stunning views over both sides of the Peninsula now guides you to the small hamlet of Glanlough. Later that day, you will have a choice of routes with the chance to climb up to Seefin – the highest point on the Peninsula at 345m. Sit down and watch the Beara Peninsula, and the Mizen Head Peninsula to the south, stretch out into the Atlantic Ocean.

To the end of the world and back! The lighthouse at the tip of the Sheep’s Head Peninsula, where rugged cliff edge views await you, really does seem like the edge of civilisation. Without doubt, one of the finest walks in Ireland. Going back in time, you will pass the dwelling houses of the miners working in the19th century copper mines and also the ruin of a World War II look-out station and signal tower as you follow an old military road along the southern coastline with views over Dunmanus Bay. As the terrain changes to flatter agricultural land, old fishermen’s paths and small roads guide you to Kilcrohane, the most westerly village on the Sheep’s Head Peninsula.

Take a walk along the seashore and then pass the ruins of an old Bardic school. Old country roads and farm tracks guide you past ancient settlements and close to a Bronze Age stone circle at Ahakista before you continue through the hills and along quite farming roads to the charming little village of Durrus.

The Four Mile Water River leads you away from Durrus and then quite roads guide you uphill over Barnageehy, the “Height of the Wind”. Deserted old country roads then take you all the way back into Bantry with an option to revisit the grounds of Bantry House.
