  • Day 1 Arrival in Viana do Castelo

From your point of arrival, use the public transport information we provide to make the journey to Viana do Castelo – a lively and charming town, known for its rich maritime heritage.

  • Day 2 Viana do Castelo - Convento de Cabanas

    8 Miles / 13 Km 4-5 Hrs 720 ft / 220 Metres

This lovely stage begins in the urban heart of Viana do Castelo but quickly transitions into a charming blend of winding village lanes and gently undulating forest paths that hug the hillside. The route follows small roads and footpaths through Areosa and Afife, alternating between sea views and stretches of shaded woodland. Long sections run close to the Atlantic, where the sound of waves and glimpses of sandy beaches accompany the walk. You pass traditional stone houses, small chapels, and fields bordered by old walls as the path stays mostly flat and easy. There are several inviting spots to pause before you finish your hike at the idyllic riverside restaurant at Cabanas. Transfer from there to your accommodation.

  • Day 3 Convento de Cabanas - Caminha

    9.5 Miles / 15 Km 4-6 Hrs 560 ft / 170 Metres

This stage is full of memorable moments. After a transfer back to Convento de Cabanas, the route climbs along ancient woodland paths before descending steadily toward the coast and the wide, golden beach of Vila Praia de Âncora. From there, you follow the shoreline north, passing rugged coves and open sea views on the way to the charming seaside village of Moledo. As Caminha draws near, Portugal’s picturesque border town reveals itself with sweeping vistas over the Rio Minho and the distinctive Santa Tecla Mountain across the water, marking the meeting point between Portugal and Spain.

  • Day 4 Caminha - Vila Nova de Cerveira

    8 Miles / 13 Km 4-5 Hrs 200 ft / 60 Metres

Leaving Caminha, and staying on the Portuguese side of the river, the trail sets out along the wide estuary of the Minho River, following a calm and mostly flat ecovia lined with reeds, river beaches, and scattered viewpoints across to Spain. The path moves through quiet stretches of woodland and open riverside meadows, with occasional fishing huts and small docks adding to the scenery. As you continue inland, the river narrows and the landscape grows greener, offering long, gentle sections shaded by overhanging trees.  Highlights include tranquil stretches near Lanhelas and Seixas, and the approach to Vila Nova de Cerveira, a town known for its art scene, riverside gardens, and medieval center.

  • Day 5 Vila Nova de Cerveira - Valença

    10 Miles / 16 Km 4-6 Hrs 390 ft / 120 Metres

Leaving Vila Nova de Cerveira, the trail follows the calm flow of the Minho River, moving north along Portugal’s natural border with Spain. The path remains peaceful and mostly level, winding past small hamlets, shaded woodland, small river beaches, and long stretches of open riverside scenery. Views across to the Galician shore appear often, along with quiet spots where fishermen work the water. As Valença draws near, the route begins a gentle rise, leading you toward the towering defensive walls of the historic fortress and the vibrant heart of the old town.

  • Day 6 Cossourado (São Bento da Porta Aberta) - Valença

    8 Miles / 12.5 Km 4-5 Hrs 390 ft / 120 Metres

After a morning transfer, you follow quiet country lanes and forested trails that wind downhill through the lush Minho landscape. The route gently undulates across small valleys and past stone walls draped in ivy, with the sound of trickling streams accompanying your steps. Along the way, you’ll find shaded picnic spots and welcoming cafés, perfect for a morning coffee or a leisurely lunch beneath the trees. As you approach the border town of Valença, the path leads you through its impressive 17th-century fortress, with panoramic views over the River Minho and the Spanish town of Tui just across the water.

  • Day 7 Departure from Valença

There are regular bus services from Valença to other Portuguese and Spanish cities and airports. Your hosts will help with travel information, and we can provide further details upon request.
