Our 'Slow Adventure' hiking tours of the Hadrian's Wall Path focus on the most exciting central section and cover less daily distance than our standard Gentle itineraries. They are designed to provide hikers with a more immersive and relaxed experience while exploring the rich history and stunning landscapes of this iconic UNESCO World Heritage Site. This type of tour is perfect for those who prefer a slower pace, allowing them more time to enjoy and explore the archaeology and attractions along the central section of Hadrian's Wall.
  • Day 2 Brocolitia Fort to Once Brewed

    8 Miles / 13 Km 3-4 Hrs 820 ft / 250 Metres

After a short transfer into the Northumberland National Park, your hike starts from the Roman Fort of Brocolitia with its sacred well and Temple of Mithras. Soon, you are passing Roman Milecastles and turrets before the trail rises to snake up and down along the top of the Northumberland Crags. Visit the superbly preserved Fort at Housesteads and then continue along some of the most spectacular sections of Hadrian’s Wall. Not far from there you find the famous museum and active archaeological site at the Roman Fort of Vindolanda.

Today starts with more classic Hadrian’s Wall scenery and exciting sections of the Wall along steep cliffs as well as the highest point of the entire trail at Green Slacks. You pass through Great Chesters Fort with its original Roman altar before you return to the top of the hills for some more exciting and well-preserved Wall sections at Cawfield and Walltown Crags. Visit the Roman army Museum before you finally leave the National Park near Greenhead where the route descends from the heights of the crags and the imposing ruins of Thirlwall castle mark the end of today’s hike.
