The Route
The Costa Verde & Minho River Trails showcase the very best of northern Portugal, combining stretches of refreshing coastline with peaceful inland paths through the Minho region. Your journey starts in the historic city of Viana do Castelo, with its elegant squares and sweeping views over the Lima estuary. The coast then leads you to the lovely seaside town of Vila Praia de Âncora, where fishing boats still line the beautiful beach. From Caminha, the trail follows the mouth of the River Minho inland.
As you travel east, the route follows riverside paths from coastal freshness, past vineyard-dotted hillsides and forested valleys, with each stage revealing a different facet of the Minho’s beauty. Towns such as Vila Nova de Cerveira, renowned for its art and festivals, and Valença, with its mighty fortress walls, highlight the region’s cultural richness.
The walk from Rubiães or Cossourado to Tui follows the route of ancient Roman roads on woodland paths and through rolling farmland and quiet villages, before descending towards the fortress town of Valença. Our moderate tours then cross the River Minho into Spain. This is a symbolic finale to a walking holiday that remains firmly rooted in Portugal’s landscapes, history and hospitality.
